As a member of the healthcare team, the Customer Service Specialist demonstrates active patient advocacy to ensure all rights are identified and met for every patient. This job encompasses all duties relating to providing exemplary patient care services. Outstanding customer service skills and understanding of confidentiality and productivity are required by the Customer Service Specialist

Collection Representative Patient Accounts

  • Accepts inbound phone calls from patients, physician offices, insurance carriers, etc. with the intent to resolve the caller’s concern immediately
  • Keeps all face to face interactions positive and professional
  • Responds promptly to patient inquiries regarding hospital and physician billing procedures, policies and statements
  • Utilizes multiple resources to resolve patient inquiries while on the phone, in person or preparing/reviewing billing email or written correspondence
  • Collects patient payments and follows levels of authority for posting adjustments, refunds and contractual allowances
  • Understands different payer regulations and can communicate effectively with patients regarding their Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
  • Documents all patient account activities concisely, including future steps needed for resolution
  • Prepares written responses to patients and customers regarding account resolution and complaint recovery when appropriate
  • Interacts effectively with other administrative departments and Riverview service areas on a daily basis to facilitate issues resolution
  • Identifies barriers to efficient departmental operations and takes an active role in developing appropriate and effective solutions
  • Performs filing, data entry and other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience Required:

  • Minimum: Three (3) years experience in Patient Accounts, Patient Access and Customer Service in an acute care hospital and/or physician office setting.
  • Customer service and the ability to interact professionally with internal and external contacts
  • Technical expertise in all aspects of health care benefits including HMO's, PPO, indemnity plans as well as Medicare, Medicaid, and other local or State programs. 
  • Full understanding of system functionality and reports. Knowledge of EPIC Patient Accounting System experience is recommended.
