THIS POSITION WOULD BE MEDICAL/SURGICAL UNIT COORDINATOR/EDUCATOR 2P-2:30A THREE DAYS A WEEK WITH POSSIBLE NEGOTIABLE HOURS COVERING EVENINGS. POSITION SUMMARY
- Coordinates clinical activities in a patient care area with staff, physicians and other departments. These activities include but are not limited to performance improvement activities, overseeing the daily operation of the unit, making patient rounds, being a clinical resource person for all staff, assisting with staff evaluations and being a liaison between the unit and the manager. This position is a mix of clinical resource, management resource, with at least 25% of time spent in direct patient care. Supervises teams of care givers consisting of RNs and technical support persons specific to that unit.
- Complies with all applicable policies and procedures, including, but not limited to: all departmental and functional policy and procedure, maintaining acceptable attendance records, arriving for duty punctually, and following dress code.
- Must participate in performance improvement activities as requested.
- Must assume information management responsibilities.
- Must have knowledge and skills pertinent to the functional approach to patient care.
- Must perform duties as an active member of the healthcare team.
- Must demonstrate a knowledge of team dynamics and contribute to team building and skills related to participation in and strengthening of the multidisciplinary team approach to the delivery of patient care.
- Must have professional skills and knowledge in advanced nursing to provide effective and safe patient care.
- Will participate in and share responsibility for patient care with other team members and physicians.
- Must serve on hospital and unit committees as deemed necessary by the manager/director to ensure that patient care is planned and effectively delivered.
- As a member of the care team, will conduct themselves in such a manner that demonstrates respect for the individual dignity of patients, families, fellow associates and physicians and fulfills the mission and values of Riverview Hospital.
- Supports and communicates the mission and values of Riverview Health to their team.
- Must implement activities necessary for attainment of unit objectives.
- Be a liaison between the unit's manager and keep the director informed on reportable situations.
- Must identify, ensure and document compliance to regulatory agency mandates to assure compliance with federal, state and local requirements.
- Serve as a resource person on technical and professional matters for personnel.
- Interprets, supports and recommends administrative and nursing policies and procedures for personnel.
- Must anticipate and respond to patient needs.
- Will make patient rounds daily.
- Must actively work to ensure that patient rights are identified and met.
- Must respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Must make team assignments by reviewing the needs of patients and the teams capabilities to meet them, taking into consideration age related concenrs if appropriate.
- Must work with other disciplines to ensure that planning and implementation of care is coordinated and collaborative in nature.
- Serve as a liaison between teams, physician, other units and ancillary departments to provide optimum care for patients.
- Must evaluate and reward team and individual performance.
- Implements corrective action as necessary and according to policy and procedure of all those that report the Unit Coordinator.
- Must promote a sense of team spirit by creating a culture of mutual respect and high performance expectations among all team members.
- Facilitates effective functioning of care teams by ensuring that individual team members know and understand their role, functions and responsibilities.
- Assists the manager/direcotr in the selection and replacement of team members.
- Must demonstrate phlebotomy and IV therapy knowledge and skills and assist and/or assume IV team responsbilities as needed.
- Must be able to safely and effectivley use medical equipment to carry out planned nursing interventions when assisting staff and obtain equipment when needed.
- Must be knowledgeable of and demonstrate skills in the principles of infection prevention, reduction, and control.
- Must comply with all applicable policies and procedures.
- In the absence of the manager, the Unit Coordinator will assume the managers duties.
- Must remain current and competent in knowledge and skills necessary to meet the responsibility of the position.
- Must obtain competencies for performing new techniques or skills within one year of being in the position.
- Must assist and maintain policies and procedures for patient care area.
- Must attend 80% of department meetings to enhance personal and professional growth.
- Must provide input into performance appraisal of new employees and complete appraisal of other staff members.
- Must conduct a rapid, systematic collection of data relevant to each patient's chief complaint, age and social situation to obtain sufficient information to determine patient acuity and any immediate physcial, phychological or social needs.
- Must oversee completion of paperwork on each patient.
- Must oversee accurate and ongoing physical, psychological, social, safety and educational and discharge needs of each patient.
- Provide input and assist with annual skills day and additional personnel training as needed.
- Assist with orientation and training of new employees.
- Assist in resolution of conflicts concerning staff, patient, family and other ancillary personnel. Provide continued education on unit.
- Assist in development and implementation of yearly budget.
- Meet with and participate in negotiations with manufacturing reps for new products and/or skills.
- Assume additional managerial responsibilities as appropriate to the position in order to assure the attianment of department goals.
- Models excellent customer service skills.
- Must be able to demonstrate a high degree of independent access to confidential patient and organizational; information and must be able to handle such information appropriately. Other duties as assigned.
- Must be able to appropriately place patients on unit and use SBAR format for giving and receiving report.
- If applicable, must function as testing personnel under CLIA1988 regulations as they relate to point of care testing.
- Must ensure the Standards of Care, standards of Practice, Standards of Competency, Nurse Practice Act, TEAMSTEPPS, Standards of Excellence, and nursing policies and procedures are followed by the team members on the nursing unit.

Job Requirements:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Level of Education
- Minimum: Graduation from an accredited nursing school
- Preferred: BSN
- Other: Certification in a nursing speciality preferred

Level of Experience
- Minimum: 3-5 years current Medical Surgical clinical experience 2-3 years Charge Nurse experience
